December 20th Squash with Jack Layton, party at Krista Ross Squash with Jack Layton was postponed from our 10:30 time until 2 PM. This was due to an emergency meeting called by Mayor elect Mel Lastman. As consideration for postponing I asked Jack to present an idea to the council. Since I had several hours to reallocate, I went down to the my boat to winterize it. As I arrived, my friend Hiker Mike Kirby was on his Saturday morning walk. He had just completed his CFRB show on "Hiker Mike". We had a chat as he kept me company while I did my chores. I then went on to my squash game and to find out if Jack had presented my idea to council. The idea is that the Library system should be considered Education and not part of the Social Service System. This has a twofold effect. 1) it is the responsibility of the provincial government to take over educational costs, and 2) the provincial government was looking to download social service costs to the cities. The city is concerned about having such huge costs traded down to it. This would take some of the pressure off, and would put the library costs where they should be : with the educational system. Frankly, in the longer term it should not make any difference, but as these politicians refuse to integrate their thinking some logical connections should be pointed out to them. This was the same idea we discussed early in our trip as we went from town to town. Notwithstanding this issue, Jack beat me two to one in an agreed upon short match. His lob serve devastated me. After the match, I went over to the Kirsch home where I had a short meeting with Andrew, one of the first "Vision Changers" I briefed him on the meeting that took place the day before at "Skyspace". I made a package up for him and he will decide which way he would like to maintain his involvement. I then had a meeting with Andrew’s father and we discussed a number of issues relative to Pan Pacific Strategies, and their support for the World Citizenship Challenge. In overview, we should beginning January with sponsorship participation. We will look at the nature of our involvement early in the new year. Later that evening I went to a party at Krista Ross. Met the daughter of an "elder" there - Holly. We agreed to explore some method of co-operation in the near future. Evening over and home to bed. |
