Saturday March 21st Making a drum with uncle Pat. Making a drum is a great experience. Eight of us got together at the Rose Crystal Gallery and we began with a minimum of ritual, including smudging and a sweetgrass cleansing. We then selected our wooden frame and wet deerskin. The deerskin had been soaking in a soapy lye solution for several weeks and then was treated with some Lysol to minimize the smell. We cut out the lacing, punched holes in the skin, and laced the skin and before noon we had ourselves a drum. Not one that could be played for a few days as it had to dry but you could almost hear it. We had a lunch, and then we called it a day and left our drums to dry. We were to come back the next day to make our drum stick.
