On the way to my meeting with Donna, I had the idea to stop in at the Cancer Centre that was on the street that I was living - Heather. I went to the administration office and tried to find out whom I might talk with about developing a program for "stopping smoking" as part of our world Citizenship Challenge. The idea is basically that we establish a program whereby we pay people to use our website to learn how to quit smoking. We offer to pay the first xxx number. I did not develop the details of how we would measure the success, but if one could imagine that we offer $1,000 to individuals who learn to quit through the internet, then we know that it can be done, and we begin to lower the amount paid until we feel a drop-off in participants in the program. We could establish a separate registration process, and a definitive program that could be monitored by the site. The next step is to find an operating partner for this idea - perhaps a US tobacco company that has just agreed to pay $368 billion dollars in fines - perhaps they could be a sponsor - how would one find out how to connect to them? Perhaps an alliance partner like the cancer society could be the right partner? I also contacted the BC ministry of Health and they put me in touch with a John Blatherwick. He has been involved with some recent stop smoking campaign and he might be interested. We will find out next week when he returns to his office.
Met with Donna Juliani and we had a pleasant meeting exploring areas of mutual interest. Not to clear on what might come from this , but it is always great to meet bright intellignet people doing things they love to do. Her husband John could not make the meeting as he is preparing for an upcoming production, and his lead actor has a health problem. After our meeting, and picking up my computer - half fixed - I went back to the apartent to attempt to connect with my e-mail - no luck - the phone line would not get me connected no matter how many variations I tried. I decided to rent a car and leave on the Friday. I made some other calls connecting with my old associate Jean Laravee - guitar maker extraordinaire - I finally got through to him and found him to be in great spirits - his business hads really grown - seventy employees - going to expand to 120 - moving to a new plant - and his guitars sell in many countries of the world. Both his boys are actively working in the business. We talked for a bit and agreed that we would get together the next time I came to Vancouver.. I also suggested that his boy might look at our website in order that he may find out a little more of the detail on what I am doing. My car rental came by to pick me up at six PM. I went out to an early show and saw Mr. Bean - enjoyed the laugh. After the show, went to dinner and caught some Flamenco Dancers while I enjoyed chicken wings, potatoes and a beer.
Left early to make some phone calls as I wanted to talk with White Cloud before leaving Vancouver. Missed him, he is still on Gabriola at Sheila and Stevens. Called Rossi Grose and made arrangements for lunch on Saturday.
