Visit with Dr. Cecil Cragg, airport, missing Canada 3000, Kimberly

Called Dr. Cragg and went to meet with him. I did an interview on some of his life and he gave me two books and a manuscript for a play that we have permission to put up on the net. He showed me his workspace and his computer. In spite of the fact he has had the computer for probably five years, he is just using it as a typewriter as he knows not how to use the mouse for creating paragraphs and spacing etc. I gave him a short lesson before leaving.

Off to the airport early, hoping to get clearance as I was anticipating some problems because I only had a one way ticket. Well, the US Customs guy I met with said he would not pre-clear me, and in fact he said he would not let me into the country. I asked him what I would need. He said a bus ticket from Seattle to Vancouver would be sufficient. I explored further, and he seemed to be quite adamant that he would not let me in. Why, if I had a ticket from Seattle to Vancouver.? Because I told him that I would not use it. He would believe me there, but he would not believe that I would leave when I said I had to leave. Interesting lesson in double speak. I am certain he did not see the foolishness of his position, but as I did not want to make trouble I moved on. He did agree that if I could demonstrate that I had the funds to leave that he might let me in. I took this as a suggestion to go over and get a printout on my interact card to demonstrate I had funds to draw on. As it turned out when I finally got to the Customs as I entered the US, all the normal questions were asked, and the officer did not make a big issue of my not having a return ticket. I told him that I expected to be in LA for several days, and would certainly be home by the 23rd. He also asked if I had recently been to the US. And I said that I had been there in August for the Amenia Conference, and in June at the United Nations. He seemed comfortable and stamped my admission lip to the US.

While waiting to get on my stand-by for Canada 3000 I was asked to take a picture of two people - Kimberly from LA and her friend James from Vancouver. We chatted for a while and as we talked my friend Amber from the Fraser Valley came over to let me know that there was only one seat left on the plane - it was Kimberly’s’ . I gave Amber a Friendship Penny to let her know there was no hard feelings, and I quickly went over to Alaska Airways to purchase the $308 fare - only $170 on stand-by. Poorer by $130 I went through the check-out happy to be in the waiting room for take -off. I grabbed a sandwich, and noticed Kimberly in the waiting room for the Canada 3000. Went over to have a chat and we talked until her plane was ready to leave. We agreed to call her in LA and maybe we will get together.

Called my sister Joann and she agreed to pick me up at the airport as she did not want me to waste money on a car rental. I welcomed the idea because it will prevent me from getting lost.
